Welcome to the Tiny-Tornado photo gallery.  These photos are of the various versions that have been produced and built by amateur radio operators from around the world.

"Tiny-Tornado Prototype Rev. 1a #2"
by Nobuharu Suzuki - JP2FKG
  • Power Supply: 9-volt battery
  • Frequency: 7038KHz
  • RF Power Output: 200mA

JP2FKG reports the little transceiver works FB in Japan!  This was also the first time he drilled holes in a chassis.  He did an EXCELLENT job!

"Tiny Tornado Prototype Rev. 1b #1"
by Brice D. Hornback - KA8MAV

At this time, the transceiver was still being called the "QRPp-I Transceiver".  It later became known as the "QRPp-I Mini-Transceiver" and then on to become the "Tiny-Tornado" as we know it today.

"Tiny-Tornado REV2a"
by Chuck Carpenter - W5USJ

Chuck applied a few "mods" by using improvements found in the REV2b schematic such as the improved output filter.  The new output filter uses the yellow T37-6 toroid core and there is a capacitor in parallel to the coil on the bottom side of the board.

BEAUTIFUL!  Check out the tiny mint tin case Chuck fit the transceiver into!  MUCH smaller than an Altoids tin!

The aluminum case measures only 4.25" x 2.25" x 1.25".

Notice the homebrew 12-volt @ 700mAH NiMH battery pack?  I keep this charged with a small solar panel that is about the same size as a CD jewel case.

TT-40 Wired in Case:
3.8885 oz (110.20g)

12V@700mAH NiMH Battery Pack:
4.6985 oz (133.20g)

Total Weight:
8.587 oz (243.40g)

"Tiny-Tornado REV2c"
by Jack, W6ABC

From: "Jack W6ABC"
Subject: Tiny Tornado - First QSO
Date: Friday, February 08, 2002 2:14 AM

Well, exciting is the word! Just finished my Tiny-Tornado kit from Brice and QRPp and got it on running on 40 meter CW and heard a CQ thought I'd go after it. I worked W0TUP in Minot, ND. Got a 4-5-9 report. The Tiny Tornado was putting out 300 mW and powered by a 9v battery and mounted in the proverbial Altoids Tin. Only thing I have to do is adjust the transmit/receive offset so that the receive and transmit frequencies coincide a bit better.

Tiny-Tornado TT-40 REV2c
by Brice D. Hornback - KA8MAV

Based on a modified REV2c circuit, this Tiny-Tornado tunes the entire 40-meter band with a PTO/VFO.  I designed the PTO/VFO PCB based on the PTO kit by WA6OTP.  Modifications to the Tiny-Tornado (the addition of a buffer/amplifier) were done with the help of KG6CYN.

Tiny-Tornado 20/40 REV2c
Build Date: 02/25/2001

This is the world's first dual-band Tiny-Tornado.  It operates on both 20 and 40 meters via a toggle switch on the back of the transceiver.

This rig was built using a pair of prototype band-module boards I developed for the Tiny-Tornado line of transceiver kits.  I also implemented a VXO and a TX/RX offset.  Here are some details:

Total Weight:
3.9745 Ounces!
(112.68 Grams)

20-Meters
398mW Output @ ~13.8-volts
QRP Frequency: 14.060 MHz
14.05802 to 14.06538 MHz
14.05790 to 14.05872 MHz

40-Meters
750mW Output @ ~13.8-volts
QRP Frequency: 7.040 MHz
7.03889 to 7.04170 MHz
7.03884 to 7.03915 MHz

This very special Tiny-Tornado is now owned by Doc, K0EVZ.
